Tour Introduction

Discover the story of the French Poilus and American Doughboys on this tour which looks at three of the great battlefields of WW1. Starting in the Champagne region, we take a look around Navarin Farm, before moving on to see the American memorial at Sommepy. Moving into the Argonne forest we look at the early stages of the war and the Meuse-Argonne Offensive in the area. We complete our tour by looking at the Battlefields of Verdun , visiting Fort Douaumont, with its tunnels, bunkers and shell damage.

Tour Itinerary

Day 1

Regional departure by coach, then to our hotel in Reims, where we stay for four nights.

Day 2 - Battlefields of Champagne

We travel to our hotel in Reims and start on the battlefields of the Champagne. We visit the area around Navarin Farm, looking at the French attacks here in 1915.

At Sommepy we see the American Memorial and remains of trenches where American forces fought in September 1918.

After lunch we visit the Champagne Museum and visit the amazing trench system at Main de Massiges: this large area of trenches have been reconstructed around original mine craters using experimental archaeology. They offer arguably the most realistic impression of what a WW1 battlefield once looked like.

Day 3 - Argonne

We travel to the Argonne forest today, looking at the French attacks in this area in the early stages of the war.

After lunch, we see the superb Romagne War Museum, which houses more than 30,000 objects recovered from the nearby battlefields.

We then look at the American Meuse-Argonne Offensive in this area in September 1918 seeing the huge war cemetery with more than 14,000 American graves.

We end at the impressive Montfaucon American Memorial, seeing the battlefield ruins here and looking out the area where America launched its first major battle of the Twentieth Century.

Day 4 - Verdun

Today we visit the haunting battlefields of Verdun where more than a thousand shells fell per square meter and there were more than 600,000 French and German casualties.

We start at the superb Fleury War Museum and then visit Douaumont French Cemetery and the Ossuary, where the bones of over 120,000 men are laid to rest.

After lunch in Verdun we visit Fort Douaumont, always at the heart of the battle, walking the galleries and tunnels within and going on top of the fort to see the shell damage and bunkers.

We then travel across to the ‘Left Bank’ of the battlefield, seeing the high ground at Mort Homme and Cote 304.

Hotel

You will stay for four nights at the 3-star Ibis Reims Tinqueux. The hotel is located approx. 3 miles from the centre of Reims. The hotel has 74 comfortable, air-conditioned rooms that have been fully renovated, offering you a stay in a peaceful green setting. The hotel has a small Courtepaille Restaurant and there are numerous dining options within walking distance and the bar, serves snacks and light meals.
