About the tour: The Beersheba Centenary & the Palestine Campaign


Tour Introduction

This tour sees us follow Israel's involvement in World War 1 and take a look at the other wars that involved the region. As we journey throughout the region we visit sites where the battles took place, see memorials and pay our respects in the many cemeteries. On this battlefield tour, we visit Golan Heights, the castle of Nimrod, Kibbutz El Rom, Tel Faher and Jerusalem. We also spend time in Gaza, seeing the Gaza Strip and discussing the territory's involvement in WW1, before we head to Beersheba on the centenary of the towns attack.

Tour Itinerary

Oct 26

Fly to Tel Aviv, where you will be met and transferred to your hotel for one night. Please note due to flight timings for Heathrow departures, an evening meal is not included on the first evening. However, a meal will be served in-flight.

Oct 27 - Haifa & Jezreel Valley

We head north stopping at the Ba'hai gardens in Haifa to see the Turkish canons from 1918 and then travel onwards to Megiddo seeing the Archaeological site of Armageddon and overlooking the Jezreel Valley over which Australian forces moved on their push north in 1918. We stay for two nights in the Upper Galilee area at Kibbutz Kfar Giladi, or similar.

Oct 28 - Golan Heights

We spend today visiting battle sites on the Golan Heights and various memorials commemorating Israeli units who were active in 1967 and 1973. We also see the Crusader era castle of Nimrod with its tremendous views over the road to Damascus and the Golan. We will visit the Kibbutz El Rom and see an authentic movie presenting the battle that took place close to the site, where an Israeli tank unit of less than 40 tanks held back over 700 Syrian tanks in 1973. We will overlook the border with Syria close to the abandoned town of Kuneitra through which the British forces bypass in WWI.

Oct 29 - Tel Faher & Ramle

Lookout at the Israel/Lebanese border, visit Tel Faher, scene of the decisive battle to capture the Golan Heights in June 1967. From there we drive south to the town of Ramle. We visit the commonwealth cemetery and have a briefing on the Palestine Campaign WWI. From there visit the Israeli Armoured Corps memorial and museum at Latrun. We stay overnight in the area of Ashkelon.

Oct 30 - Jerusalem

We start at Jaffa Gate in Jerusalem and see where General Allenby entered the old city and where he declared Jerusalem liberated from the Turks on the steps of David’s Citadel. We will tour the Old City, looking at some of the sites such as the Western Wall, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and places of action in the liberation of East Jerusalem from Jordanian occupation in 1967. We stay in Jerusalem for three nights.

Oct 31 - Gaza Strip & Anzac

We look over the Gaza Strip from Black Arrow Monument. Visit Anzac monument, discuss the battles on Gaza WWI. We then visit Beersheba on the centenary of the attack on the town. We hope to visit Tel Sheva and get a view over the ground over which the light horsemen charged. We will also visit the Australian Light Horse Memorial, the Allenby Memorial, and the Commonwealth Cemetery in the town.

Nov 1 - Battle of Jerusalem

Spend the day looking at the battle of Jerusalem visiting Nebi Samweil, the strategic Turkish outpost overlooking the city. We visit the Commonwealth cemetery and memorial on Mount Scopus with its view over the city. We then visit the Mount of Olives and St. Andrew's Church, a church built to the memory of Scottish soldiers killed in the campaign.

Hotel

All hotels will be a minimum 3-star hotels. You will stay one night in Tel Aviv at the Grand Beach, or similar. Two nights will then be spent in Upper Galilee at Kefar Giladi, or similar. In Ashkelon, we stay for one night at the Leonardo Asheklon, or similar. In Jerusalem, you will stay for three nights at the Grand Court Hotel, or similar.

Our Door-to-Door Service collects you from your home and takes you to meet your transfer vehicile, then brings you back at the end of the holiday. Door-to-Door Service is available within a 20-mile radius of one of our free joining points and is from £90 per car, return (up to 4 passengers per vehicle).
