Tour Introduction

The 1st July 2022 marks the 106th Anniversary of the Battle of the Somme, one of the defining battles of the Great War and a turning point in British history. Heralded as the ‘Big Push’, in one day alone more than 57,000 men became casualties, and in a battle that lasted 141 days it would become the graveyard of the Pals, of Kitchener’s Army. Join with us as we travel to the haunting Somme battlefields and attend the ceremony at Thiepval on the anniversary.

Tour Itinerary

Day 1

Local departure by coach, then to our hotel in Belgium or northern France for a four-night stay.

Day 2 - Gommecourt, Serre & Vignacourt

We begin our tour of the Somme Battlefields in the northern sector, visiting the area at Gommecourt, and later at Serre. Here we walk up onto the battlefield where the Northern Pals battalions fought on the Somme, with men from Accrington, Barnsley, Bradford, Hull, Leeds, and Sheffield went into action, and fell in such great numbers.

After lunch in Albert we visit the Somme 1916 Museum beneath the town, and then look at life behind the lines on the Somme seeing Heilly Station Cemetery and then going to Vignacourt where we look at the amazing collection of WW1 images in the ‘Maison des Australien’ museum, which showcases a unique archive of portraits of soldiers taken in the village.

Day 3 - Beaumont-Hamel, High Wood & Delville Wood

We start today at Beaumont-Hamel, visiting the Sunken Lane and the Hawthorn Mine Crater, which was blown on the opening day of the Somme offensive. At Thiepval we visit the Ulster Tower Memorial and spend time at the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing and the nearby Visitors' Centre.

After lunch, we look at the later fighting on the Somme, seeing the battlefield areas at High Wood, Delville Wood, Flers and the Le Transloy Ridge.

Day 4 - Somme 106th Anniversary

Today is the 106th Anniversary of the First Day of the Somme. We attend the morning ceremony at the Thiepval Memorial, arranged by the local British Legion Somme Branch. In the afternoon we visit some 1st July battlefields at Ovillers, La Boisselle, Mametz and Montauban.

Join your tour coach at the interchange.

On most tours if you’d prefer to join your tour coach at Stop 24 services, you can park your car in the car park which is accredited by the Park Mark safer parking scheme and is monitored 24 hours a day by CCTV. Payment for the parking is made on arrival using the self-service machines.

Excludes tours to Ireland and the U.K. and tours travelling via Brittany Ferries.
